Delivering Wound Care to Haiti

June 7, 2010 - Spiracur medical officer, Dr. Kenton Fong, recently travelled to Haiti to volunteer his expertise as a plastic surgeon to the ongoing relief effort. Dr. Fong was able to treat numerous patients and provide training on use of the SNaP™ Wound Care System. Spiracur has donated a number of SNaP™ Systems to the Project Medishare Hospital in Port Au Prince, Haiti as part of Spiracur's mission to improve the lives of wound care patients around the world. The hospital is run by the University of Miami and is one of the few operational operating rooms in Haiti. Like many of its peers in the wound healing industry, Spiracur is committed to providing ongoing supplies to the relief efforts.

According to Dr. Fong, a major problem emerging in Haiti is the plethora of chronic wounds resulting from initial injuries suffered during the earthquake. Common examples include chronic wounds from orthopedic surgery complications and pressure sores on spinal cord injury patients. Moreover, many otherwise healthy patients are kept in the hospital solely for their chronic wound needs. Because there is no reliable electricity in the tent housing, use of a powered negative pressure wound therapy device is not an option for these patients. The SNaP™ Wound Care System has been particularly impactful in this environment since it does not require an electrical power source to operate.

Said Dr. Fong, "It was frustrating at times not to have access to many of the basic medical supplies we take for granted in the US; however, it was amazing to witness the optimism and hope these courageous people exhibited in the face of significant pain and hardship. There is such a tremendous need in so many areas of patient care in Haiti right now - I hope that our technology can play a role in relieving some of the suffering.” Kenton plans to return soon to help additional patients as they deal with devastating chronic wounds acquired as a result of this natural disaster.
